Middle School Portfolio Development

Drawing classes for artists aged 10 – 14 who want to improve their skills and make pieces for a high school application. We’ll mix concrete skill development with playful community-building activities so artists learn to use technical drawing tools to create their own works of art. Small class sizes allow for individual instruction and the opportunity for artists to develop their own artistic visions with guidance from practicing arts and educators. As with all things Lookout Collective, these classes also emphasize our experiments in emergent communities where we all lean on each other to build connections and take care of each other.

Session 1: Surreal Still-lives
Through a focus on observational drawing skills and playing memory games, we will learn to visualize an object before drawing it, determining proper proportions and placement. Then, after a dive into surrealist and dream-like artwork, we will use charcoal and ink to create fantastical images of objects in strange settings.

Session 2: Party Portraits

Drawing someone’s portrait can be intimidating! In this session, we will focus on learning secret artists’ tricks to capture a person’s likeness through line transfer and gridding. We will then make two large portraits of a special person in your life using a variety of different mark making techniques such as hatching, scribbling, and stippling.
